The following are news items of interest from various areas of Solano County as reported in 1865. Six miles east of Suisun City, Mrs. D.H. Fitzpatrick was selling her 160-acre ranch, which had been homesteaded in 1857. The price was $2,000.

Suisun's pioneer John B. Lemon was born 1825 in Indiana and received a rudimentary education. At age 24 he was a clerk in a general store when news of the gold discovery in California reached Indiana and his imagination. In 1849, Lemon left home to travel by mule train to seek his fortune.

Last week at Solano County's exhibit at the State Fair, volunteers handed out nuts, candy, and paper fans announcing the opening of the new Nut Tree. Many visitors expressed their delight at the news that the Nut Tree was opening again, often followed by a precious memory of visits to the famous Nut Tree of old.

The New Year's news was about the "great Christmas fight" in Silveyville. A Suisun man, a "pure Union man," was visiting those parts when a drunk "Secesh Smith", also know as "Curly Headed Smith", started looking for a fight.

Flags were lowered to half-staff on all public buildings and many private businesses in Solano County, to note the sad and sudden death of Josiah Wing on June 14, 1915. He was so well-liked that the painful news of his death brought a countywide outpouring of sympathy for the family. Businesses closed the day of the funeral.
