Vallejo's Annie Lizzie Gill was a pioneer activist / Bowen, Jerry [839] [WAYITWAS-2008-839]
As I start this series of columns, I have absolutely no idea on how many installments it will take to finish the story of a remarkable lady that lived in Vallejo, Annie Lizzie Gill who was born in 1863 on a farm outside the town of Oblong, Ill. Her story is a wonderful cavalcade of events and personal anecdotes before arriving in Vallejo in 1918, but since this is a local history column, I'll stick mostly to her life here in Solano County.

Graduates Of Early Vallejo / Wichels, Ernest [805] [WICHELS-1964-805]
Today, a high school education is basic. It is considered the very minimum training to face life's problems and challenges. This past week 540 young men and women were graduated from the Vallejo Senior High School; 348 from Hogan Senior High; a total of 888 for what is undoubtedly a record graduation for our city.

Vallejo writer Mel Orpilla chronicles a tragic era in Filipino-American history in his book 'Filipinos in Vallejo' Mel was born and raised in Vallejo, and early on had an insatiable curiosity about his familys and the Filipino Communitys beginnings.

The fall of 1929 was turning out to be quite a year for the country, and for Fairfield, as well. Black Thursday - Oct. 24 - had brought about the stock market crash. People all over the country, whether they had the financial means or not, had invested in the market.

The three Josiah Wings: shipping merchant, pioneer, mayor / Dingler, Nancy [485] [RETROSPECT-2003-485]
Flags were lowered to half-staff on all public buildings and many private businesses in Solano County, to note the sad and sudden death of Josiah Wing on June 14, 1915. He was so well-liked that the painful news of his death brought a countywide outpouring of sympathy for the family. Businesses closed the day of the funeral.

Vallejo: the man who shaped California history / Dingler, Nancy [479] [RETROSPECT-2003-479]
Without a doubt, the single most influential person in California history was Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo. Mariano was one of those rare individuals, in that he was born and educated in California. Mariano rose to great heights of power and wealth, only to lose it when his dream of being part of the democratic America came true.
