/
Dingler, Nancy
[471]
[RETROSPECT-2002-471]
The fall of 1929 was turning out to be quite a year for the country, and for Fairfield, as well. Black Thursday - Oct. 24 - had brought about the stock market crash. People all over the country, whether they had the financial means or not, had invested in the market.

This week, our communities will celebrate July 4th with a variety of parades, picnics and firework events. Similar celebrations took place more than a century ago, too, bringing residents together in large numbers. One of the more elaborate July 4 celebrations in Vacaville was held in 1898.

In 1942, Fairfield was a sleepy agricultural dot on the landscape. Ragsdale airfield, as it first was known, was originally planned to be temporary. However, the mission changed as things do in wartime and the airfield became the Fairfield-Suisun Army Air Base.

Vacaville saw weddings big and small
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[116]
[WAYITWAS-2002-116]
My last column explored how the Christopher and Towson families celebrated their respective weddings amid close friends and relatives at the bride's home. Most weddings of that day were conducted in this quiet fashion. The wedding of Frank H. Buck and Annie Elizabeth Stevenson on April 29, 1886, on the other hand, was a large, elaborate affair.

A new city in search of sewers
/
Dingler, Nancy
[504]
[RETROSPECT-2004-504]
FAIRFIELD'It all came down to sewers. When members of the Fairfield Improvement Club gathered in the proverbial smoke-filled room to talk about installing a new sewer system and other improvements the night of Aug. 18, 1903, they kicked off a process that ended with the creation of a city almost 100,000 people now call home.

Fires and family life at the Water Works
/
Bowen, Jerry
[567]
[WAYITWAS-2005-567]
Some of the most interesting local history comes from the people who lived it. Last year, during the Solano County Historical Society's Pioneer Days Celebration, I was very fortunate to meet Betty Davis who lives in Fairfield. While we were talking, she asked me if I would be interested in a family history that was written by her mother, Edith Lucille Venning.
