The Sperry Division of General Mills in South Vallejo is undoubtedly Vallejo's oldest non-governmental enterprise, and is one of the larger private employers in Solano County (others, Yuba Manufacturing, Nut Tree, Gibson Publications). But not all were so inclined when they saw the fertile valleys of the Suisun. Others, not finding the riches they felt they so richly deserved for their arduous labor remembered the lushness of the valleys of Suisun they passed through on their way to the mines.

[465]
[RETROSPECT-2001-465]
Have you ever noticed how many great public buildings started out as magnificent homes before their conversion? Such a building is the current Green Valley Country Club. The house was originally built by James Harbin on 130 acres that he had homesteaded. Flags were lowered to half-staff on all public buildings and many private businesses in Solano County, to note the sad and sudden death of Josiah Wing on June 14, 1915. He was so well-liked that the painful news of his death brought a countywide outpouring of sympathy for the family. Businesses closed the day of the funeral.
