In my last column, we left the Barbours and the Alfords in Sonoma, building homes after a rigorous trip across the continent to California. A chance meeting with another Solano County historical figure, Thomas O. Larkin, resulted in a complete change of plans for the two families.

My last column looked at the early years of the Fairfield-Suisun Airbase, a wartime response to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Although the local newspapers did not report much about the activities, local residents were eager to learn more about the "great flying field."

The mid 1940's saw an unprecedented population growth in the Vacaville and Fairfield areas, due to the incoming personel for the new Fairfield-Suisun air base. For several years, both cities struggled to accommodate their new residents. Federal Housing Public Authority projects such as Waterman Park in Fairfield and Vaca Valley Acres in Vacaville were built quickly.
