/
Bowen, Jerry
[67]
[WAYITWAS-2001-67]
Today, when many remnants of our past are disappearing, it is always nice to know that a jewel survived destruction.

Lessons, then and now
/
Bowen, Jerry
[764]
[WAYITWAS-2007-764]
In my last column, we took a continuing brief look at some of the 1911 requirements as written in the Course of Study Rules for Promotion and Graduation from Solano County Schools to graduate, in the eighth grade, from grammar school.

Book aimed to lure Easterners with fruit tales
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[43]
[WAYITWAS-2000-43]
Are the people in New Orleans, St. Louis, Chicago, New York, Boston and elsewhere, who have paid a dollar a pound for California cherries in April, or who in 1887 ate nearly 2,000 carloads of California peaches, pears, plums, apricots and grapes, curious to know whence a good part of these fruits come, or to learn the manner of their growth and the appearance of the country?

Days Of May 114 Years Ago
/
Wichels, Ernest
[799]
[WICHELS-1964-799]
Many things have occurred in Vallejo's 114 years of existence. Every day must be an anniversary of some event in our community life. One way to dip into the pages of the past is to recall earlier happenings in the merry month of May.

Could schools of the past teach us something?
/
Bowen, Jerry
[766]
[WAYITWAS-2007-766]
This is the last in a series on the early rules of grammar school education. The subjects discussed were penmanship, bookkeeping and current events, as taken from the 1911 Solano County Course of Study. I'm not so sure that they are still pursued in depth in many of the schools of today to any degree.

Birds Landing tavern shot full of memories
/
Bowen, Jerry
[584]
[WAYITWAS-2005-584]
I just have to tell you about a great trip into the past last weekend. Ted Haskins, Jesse Hayden and I headed to Birds Landing last weekend to continue our ongoing, self-appointed quest to videotape as much of Solano County's history as we can. We were to meet one of this column's readers, Evelina Lawrence, who had been a resident of the town back in the 1950s. She lives in Oakland now, but she had many fond memories of the town she lived in as a child and a photo album from which we were to re-photograph pictures [...]

Helping to preserve Solano County's yore
/
Bowen, Jerry
[496]
[WAYITWAS-2004-496]
How the past is used or abused can have an important bearing on how a community or county perceives itself. Preservation and promotion of a county's collective past is a logical goal for any self-respecting people. Indeed, pride in the past is seeing resurgence lately as more and more of our precious history is bulldozed under for redevelopment. It takes dedicated people who aren't afraid to work hard in order to set aside some of our precious history in Solano County for future generations.

Dusty memories and a castle on the hill
/
Bowen, Jerry
[34]
[WAYITWAS-2000-34]
Ghost towns are often the essence of dreams of adventure. They conjure up dreams of tumbleweeds rolling down a dusty street, doors hanging askew swaying in a whimsical breeze and decaying buildings embracing the memories of a population long since gone.

Putt, Putt, Putt And The Reporter Was Printed
/
Rico, John
[872]
[RICO-1981-872]
Frequently people ask me if I find it frustrating in my endeavors to offer this column every week, which I have been doing for several decades. Frankly, at times it does bring me to the brink of total blankness in my attempts to go into a subject which can be of interest to local readers.

[ECHOS-1998-386]
History centers and historical sites in Solano County serve as resources and many offer tours and programs for groups and schools as a means of teaching people about the region's exciting past.
