Second in a series Springtime 1856: gardening chores were on people's minds. The editors of the Solano County Herald approvingly noted that citizens were taking advantage of the pleasant weather to improve their lots by planting trees and flower and vegetable gardens. Garden Seeds were the hot item at the Benicia Drug Store and Judge and Co. at the Bunker Hill House was set to do business gardening, teaming, well digging and whitewashing.

Suisun was a fast growing town from the 1870s to the 1890s. Loads of marble passed through Suisun from Judge Swan's marble quarry located about seven miles north of Suisun at Tolenas Springs en route to San Francisco. The spring of 1923 saw all of Solano County's women's clubs feverishly preparing for the event of the year - a historic pageant in Benicia to be held May 11, re-enacting the history of early California through a scripted play, scenes depicting specific events, colorful costumes and specially written music.

The Armijo trail led from Santa Fe to L.A. / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [497] [WAYITWAS-2004-497]
During the late 1830s and into the 1840s, more than 500 land grants were awarded in California, mostly to settlers of Spanish descent. Several of these grants were located in the area which later became Solano County, among them the Soscol grant given to General Vallejo, the Rio de Los Putos grant owned by William Wolfskill, the Suisun Rancho of Chief Solano, Juan Manuel Vaca's and Juan Felipe Pena's Lihuaytos grant and Rancho Tolenas or Armijo, given to Don Jose Francisco Armijo.
