For thousands, if not millions, of years Putah Creek flowed through Berryessa Valley, and out Devil's Gate, meandering along the border between Yolo and Solano counties, on its way to the Delta. By 1957, a radical change would alter the ancient landscape.

This month, Solano Irrigation District celebrated 50 years since the completion of the Monticello Dam, which forms Lake Berryessa. In the process of creating the lake, a rich and fertile valley was lost, along with the small town of Monticello, which had been established in 1882.

So far this winter, rainfall has been plentiful, filling creeks and reservoirs. If the trend continues, once again we will be able to admire Lake Berryessa's Glory Hole spilling over and be secure in the knowledge that this summer there will be enough water for farm crops and households alike.
