Mira, Mira on the wall--Oh, the tales this theater can tell / Dingler, Nancy [489] [RETROSPECT-2004-489]
VALLEJO'At the close of World War II, the employees and enlisted men and women who were stationed at Mare Island needed an outlet, something to break up the boredom. The Mare Island Recreation Association decided to form a theater group. From these practical beginnings, the theatrical troupe would grow and flourish and contribute in no small measure to the cultural and civic life of the Vallejo area.

Elmira hotels, turkey shoots thrived in 1884 / Delaplane, Kristin [363] [ECHOS-1997-363]
The population of Elmira was about 300 people in 1884. The streets were in place and the residents were living in neat cottages painted and surrounded by shade trees. If one chose to live in the area, for $1,200 you could buy John Gamble's place. It included an eight-room house with closets and a bathroom (no running water), a smokehouse, two barns, a buggy shed, a well and a windmill with a tank. The acreage was planted in fruit trees and some grapevines.

Some may have heard of the poem, "Man With a Hoe," but don't know that a man who once lived in the now-contentious Lagoon Valley wrote it. So, let's look at a little history of Charles Edwin Anson Markham and some interesting contradictions.

Mystery surrounded the demise of jail / Bowen, Jerry [70] [WAYITWAS-2001-70]
The next time you're enjoying a day at Andrews Park, go ahead and wander over to the waterfall. It's a little hard to determine the exact position because the banks of Ulatis Creek have changed considerably since 1906, but you are in the area once occupied by Vacaville's original jail.
