Voter Apathy Could Have Repercussions
/
Rico, John
[886]
[RICO-1981-886]
OUR SCHOOLS - LOSING THEIR PROMINENCE - Tuesday, June 9, may well be labeled "A Day For Disaster." That's the day local area voters went to the polls and made known their feelings in a recall election for school trustees.

Rico, John
[871]
[RICO-1981-871]
If someone mentioned to you that at one time in our past history there were as many as 1500 Chinese residing here, it would take you by surprise. But that's about the approximate number of orientals residing here, all of them ranch laborers, house servants and a few merchants.

Reliving the Saga of Vaca Fire-Eaters
/
Rico, John
[873]
[RICO-1981-873]
I've got a suggestion to make. Let's change the name of the Vacaville Fire Department to Vacaville Emergency Services. I have my doubts about the council buying this suggestion, but it's something for them to think about.

THE GREAT SOLANO FACE-LIFT - The annual crop report for Solano County has just been released by the office of Agricultural Commissioner Richard Lawley. Although the gross volume in production for 1978 fell about $2 million below the 1977 figure, the $98.3 million for 1978 was impressive.

MAYBE, PERHAPS, IF, AND BUT - I don't know how much confidence you can place in learned economists, but nevertheless, some of their utterances make good food for conversation. As a guest of Obie Ladd and his Heart Federal Savings, I had an opportunity to listen to remarks by noted economist, Ezra Solomon, who hangs out at Stanford University, He addressed a large group at the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco.

Push-Button Phones Ended a Unique Era
/
Rico, John
[907]
[RICO-1979-907]
A NOTICEABLE CHANGE - Back in 1876 when Alexander Graham Bell announced he had been successful in transmitting sound through wires, little did he dream that his discovery would skyrocket into one of the largest industries in the world. Furthermore, Bell would be astounded at the figures which show the giant American Telephone and Telegraph Company reported net earnings for the first nine months of 1979 at $4.1 billions. That's something to talk about.

THE FRUGAL VACAVILLE TAXPAYERS - Despite the fact we continually hear about the burdens of taxation, it can be said taxpayers within the City of Vacaville have been extremely frugal in expenditures for improvements throughout the past 130 years. In fact the total sum in general obligation bonds issued for civic improvements ever since those days when the Vacas and Penas first set foot here, is less than $2 million dollars.

Cheap Money Can Cure Most of Our Problems
/
Rico, John
[888]
[RICO-1981-888]
IT'S ONLY MONEY - Many times I have had the desire to be knowledgeable enough to understand our present economic problems. The more I read, the more confused I become. I am beginning to have my doubts about the wisdom of some key economists. We must accept the fact that we have strayed into a position of being credit card "junkies," and there's not a pill available in any drug store which will cure this illness.

Tax Revenue Reveals Local Shopper Habits
/
Rico, John
[878]
[RICO-1981-878]
PLUS AND MINUS OF A BEDROOM COMMUNITY - Many times we hear Vacaville residents expressing themselves about the rapid growth here in immediate years past. Without going back too far, 31 years to be exact, residents in 1950 were well satisfied with the 3,169 people living here. Today that figures is around the 42,000 mark.
