During several of the Solano County Historical Society meetings to save the old Fairfield Library building, some of those in attendance from Vallejo expressed continuing anger over the razing of the Vallejo Carnegie Library building.

Healing springs, fine hotels and plumbing / Delaplane, Kristin [311] [ECHOS-1996-311]
By October 1858, the Solano County Herald publisher, William J. Hooton, had managed to move his printing equipment by dray from Benicia to his offices in Suisun City located in a new building on the south side of the Plaza. This momentous move was made because of the county seat being situated in Fairfield. The publisher addressed this in the first edition from Suisun dated October 2.

Information for this article came from the Vacaville Heritage Council, Solano Genealogical Society and Fairfield Public Library archives. In 1866, the boundaries of Green Valley Township were laid out. They included the sites of Green Valley and Suisun Valley and the villages Cordelia/Bridgeport, and Rockville.

As traffic whizzes by on Interstate 80, few are aware that behind the fence, shaded by trees, still clearly visible on the east side of the freeway, from Fairfield, approaching Vacaville, is perhaps the oldest building in the entire county.

County's first fair boasted fairly ambitious fare / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [597] [WAYITWAS-2005-597]
Named "The Bells of Solano County Exposition," it took place in Fairfield in late May 1930. The initial idea for this event came from Solano Republican publisher David A. Weir. His goal was to combine his newspaper's 75th anniversary with a large, agriculture-oriented fair showcasing the county.

'Poorhouse' rich source of memories / Bowen, Jerry [113] [WAYITWAS-2002-113]
In 1892, an article appearing in the Vallejo Weekly Chronicle gave a rather graphic account of the conditions of Solano's first County Hospital. Built in the mid 1870s, it was then located near where Tabor Park is today in Fairfield. The property occupied by the "poorhouse," as it was commonly called, consisted of 60 acres in that area with wind breaks of eucalyptus trees.

In 1865, Judge William Kean Weston died at age 56 in Fairfield. He had been born in Lincoln County, Maine, in 1808 and been trained in the mechanics trade. He had settled in Augusta, Maine, where he worked as a contractor and then as a wholesale hardware dealer. He also studied law.

Port made Suisun City the county's hub / Delaplane, Kristin [312] [ECHOS-1996-312]
In 1858, with the location of the county seat in Fairfield, building and business in that part of the county took off at break-neck speed. The county valuation for that year was upwards to $4 million dollars at a time when taxes were $1.35 on $100. By mid-October a brick building, built by Capt. Waterman for the county clerk and treasurer, was completed by local builder A.P [...]
