Every day Is an anniversary of some person, some discovery or other event. These have varying degrees of importance. February reminds us of anniversaries because we celebrate the birthdates of Washington and Lincoln. But we are tempted this week to recall other February anniversaries which should interest many Vallejoans and Mare Island folk.

Mare Island shipyard celebrates 150th birthday / Dingler, Nancy [540] [RETROSPECT-2004-540]
This past week, Mare Island celebrated its 150th anniversary. The shipyard facility closed in March 1996. According to Sue Lemmon and Ernie Wichels, in their book, "Sidewheelers to Nuclear Power," Mare Island was established in 1854, and was the oldest naval installation in the Pacific.

Providing education to the growing number of families was a major concern during the early years. In 1855, James W. Anderson of Vacaville, the second superintendent of schools in Solano County, founded the private Ulatis Academy.

The 50th anniversary of the discovery of gold in California was celebrated in 1898, and this year is the 150th anniversary of the same event. The event was celebrated in San Francisco in 1898 with a Mining Fair. This included a diversified program for all attending.

Henry J. Kaiser, the son of German immigrants, a self-made 20th century American industrialist multi-millionaire, co-founded Kaiser-Permanente. This year, that institution is celebrating its 60th anniversary.
