Not-so-ancient history from Reporter's pages
/
Bowen, Jerry
[697]
[WAYITWAS-2007-697]
The majority of articles Sabine Georke-Shrode and I have been writing are about happenings well in the past. So, why not write a few items about what has happened that are more recent?

Another Year Is History
/
Wichels, Ernest
[779]
[WICHELS-1964-779]
The year 1963 is now another page of the past. Much happened in tragedy, space science, international politics, the curb on nuclear testing, etc. Future historians will tell future generations what was important; we all are too close to the picture to make the appraisal today.

It's been a fun ride, but I'm ready to explore the West
/
Bowen, Jerry
[868]
[WAYITWAS-2008-868]
When I started writing Solano County history articles for The Reporter, I couldn't help wondering if there was enough history to write about different subjects for any amount of time. I must admit that while I was the editor and writer for the United Prospectors Inc. publications, there was plenty of fodder about the gold country but I wasn't sure about Solano County.

Old Time News Writing
/
Wichels, Ernest
[775]
[WICHELS-1963-775]
Like women's fashions, automobile bodies and hair-dos, the style of reporting news also changes with the years. In our research the past few weeks, poring over the century-old editions of our Vallejo newspapers, we have gleaned some amusing stories. The most interesting aspect is that the city editor, in the olden days, always editorialized in his reporting. Today no city desk would dare to do so.

History between the pages
/
Dingler, Nancy
[767]
[RETROSPECT-2007-767]
Carole Noske and Brian Irwin of the Vacaville Heritage Council recently had their book, "Vacaville: Then and Now," published. The Vacaville Heritage Council has, for years, earnestly collected photos and artifacts from all over Solano County. The new book is a fascinating glimpse into what Vacaville looked like in the 1800s and what is looks like today.

A fascinating history north of Rio Vista
/
Bowen, Jerry
[31]
[WAYITWAS-2000-31]
The pages of California's history are well represented with the name John Bidwell, an early emigrant to California.

Days Of May 114 Years Ago
/
Wichels, Ernest
[799]
[WICHELS-1964-799]
Many things have occurred in Vallejo's 114 years of existence. Every day must be an anniversary of some event in our community life. One way to dip into the pages of the past is to recall earlier happenings in the merry month of May.

Memories of the Fairfield area
/
Bowen, Jerry
[198]
[WAYITWAS-2004-198]
Memoirs often provide valuable insight about the past that may seem of little importance when an individual first writes them. Today, with the last remains of the old company town of Cement rapidly disappearing under the onslaught of new development, a way of life is also being relegated to the dusty archives of history to be remembered only in the minds of a few old-timers and people who enjoy learning about the past.

Mare Island fostered many stories
/
Bowen, Jerry
[187]
[WAYITWAS-2003-187]
Last March, my fellow history columnist Goerke-Shrode, Sabine wrote an article on Mare Island, but I thought I would expand on it a little with a few stories about the ships and men who were part of the island's history, similar to "the rest of the story" as radio commentator Paul Harvey would say.
