Horseless Carriages / Wichels, Ernest [776] [WICHELS-1963-776]
This past week we learned that another American-made automobile passes from the scene. Studebaker has been a by-word for over 60 years. But this has happened to automobiles in America just about 5,100 times in the past 65 years! We are indebted to Manager Charles Monahan of the local Calif. State AA Office for an informative pamphlet on American-made automobiles--from Abbott (1909) to Zust (1908).

Days Of May 114 Years Ago / Wichels, Ernest [799] [WICHELS-1964-799]
Many things have occurred in Vallejo's 114 years of existence. Every day must be an anniversary of some event in our community life. One way to dip into the pages of the past is to recall earlier happenings in the merry month of May.

Prunings From Vaca Valley 1931 Prunings From Vaca Valley 1931
1931

This pamphlet is published by the members of the American History Class of 1930-1931 of Vacaville Union High School as an effort to preserve a few of the facts and recollections of our pioneers, in order that they may not be entirely lost or forgotten. The class is deeply indebted to the following for their kind assistance in making this pamphlet possible: Mr. Ned Wolfskill, Mrs. Maria Dolores Lyon, Mr. [...]

Hoodlums, Then, Now / Wichels, Ernest [844] [WICHELS-1964-844]
Vallejo is being plagued with a rash of broken windows, damaged automobiles, purse-snatchings, and other acts of hoodlumism. A common observation is: "What is happening to our society?" or "How did this all start?" Apparently many people believe this is all new.

Changing Fashions / Wichels, Ernest [849] [WICHELS-1964-849]
Newcomers, and the younger generation, are not as conscious of the changing fashions of living in this area as are the oldtimers or those who pore through Solano County's historical past. We are all aware of the new bodies on automobiles and the gadgets which add considerably to the cost of a car.

Submariner MacArthur / Wichels, Ernest [794] [WICHELS-1964-794]
This past week Vallejo mourned, along with an ever-grateful nation, the passing of a great American --General of the Armies Douglas MacArthur. Significantly, these same days marked the 60th anniversary of another event which is important in the lives of Mare Island and Vallejo.

Another Year Is History / Wichels, Ernest [779] [WICHELS-1964-779]
The year 1963 is now another page of the past. Much happened in tragedy, space science, international politics, the curb on nuclear testing, etc. Future historians will tell future generations what was important; we all are too close to the picture to make the appraisal today.

Rossi family steered Dixon for seven decades / Delaplane, Kristin [431] [ECHOS-1999-431]
On almost every corner of every busy street it seems there is a gas station. But that wasn't the case in the early years of this century, when "horseless carriages" began clattering over roadways. In fact, when Emil Rossi arrived in Dixon, he probably couldn't see a station at all.

Earlier Newspapers / Wichels, Ernest [781] [WICHELS-1964-781]
Like Santa Claus, the editor of an historical column has many helpers. Hardly a day passes that I do not receive some information which helps to bridge the gap between the past and the present.
