Never Before Was Drought a Vacaville Problem
THE RAINS HAVE ARRIVED - After two exceptionally dry seasons, rains in substantial quantities have arrived in the Vacaville area. With storms reminiscent of those experienced here in our yesteryear, it is again gratifying to see water standing in open fields, creeks flowing with runoff from the hills and mountains around Vacaville, and storm drains in some sections of the city failing to take care of their chores.
Never-Ending Problems - Sewage and Trash
THE BOTTOM OF THE BARREL - A friend of mine asked me one day if there were any problems in compiling this article, once each week, year-in, year-out for more than 30 years. My immediate reply was: "Oh, there's always something to write about." Well, this is one week when I will scrape the bottom of the barrel for a subject. Current Seasonal Rainfall Is Disappointing
LACK OF RAIN - ALWAYS A DRY SUBJECT - We are heading for the end of the present 1980-81 rainfall season, and with only the remainder of June in the 12-month period, there's every likelihood the total for the current season can be tabulated among the 11 in the past 80 years when precipitation has not gone over the current total of 15.12 inches.
Main Street Keeps Rolling Along
MAIN STREET - AN ORIGINAL NAME - The task of designating street names at times may be an arduous chore, but when Main Street received that title about 125 years ago there was no problem. It was the only business thoroughfare in Vacaville and it was the main one.
Familiar Names of Yesteryear Buried in History
LIKE FALLING LEAVES - Most of today's residents of Vacaville, being newcomers, would express an opinion that many of the store owners throughout the business community have been here for a long time. But, it is surprising, and a fact, that the mortality rate up and down those streets, has been exceptionally high.
