School Problems Are Nothing New / Rico, John [913] [RICO-1979-913]
THE NEVER ENDING SCHOOLS PROBLEMS The increasing costs of education, plus divergent opinions on curriculums, are a constant sore spot not only in Vacaville but throughout the United States.

Never Before Was Drought a Vacaville Problem / Rico, John [940] [RICO-1978-940]
THE RAINS HAVE ARRIVED - After two exceptionally dry seasons, rains in substantial quantities have arrived in the Vacaville area. With storms reminiscent of those experienced here in our yesteryear, it is again gratifying to see water standing in open fields, creeks flowing with runoff from the hills and mountains around Vacaville, and storm drains in some sections of the city failing to take care of their chores.

Problems Not New / Wichels, Ernest [783] [WICHELS-1964-783]
Too frequently we read of some "new" development to improve the economy; or hear someone wonder what has happened to modern youth; or see a reference to the shipyard "crisis." In reviewing the pages of one hundred years of Vallejo newspapers we come to the inevitable conclusion there is really nothing new.

Inflation Poses Problem for Vaca Retirees / Rico, John [909] [RICO-1979-909]
MAYBE, PERHAPS, IF, AND BUT - I don't know how much confidence you can place in learned economists, but nevertheless, some of their utterances make good food for conversation. As a guest of Obie Ladd and his Heart Federal Savings, I had an opportunity to listen to remarks by noted economist, Ezra Solomon, who hangs out at Stanford University, He addressed a large group at the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco.

Never-Ending Problems - Sewage and Trash / Rico, John [908] [RICO-1979-908]
THE BOTTOM OF THE BARREL - A friend of mine asked me one day if there were any problems in compiling this article, once each week, year-in, year-out for more than 30 years. My immediate reply was: "Oh, there's always something to write about." Well, this is one week when I will scrape the bottom of the barrel for a subject. Let's talk about our environmental problems of Yesteryear.

Cheap Money Can Cure Most of Our Problems / Rico, John [888] [RICO-1981-888]
IT'S ONLY MONEY - Many times I have had the desire to be knowledgeable enough to understand our present economic problems. The more I read, the more confused I become. I am beginning to have my doubts about the wisdom of some key economists. We must accept the fact that we have strayed into a position of being credit card "junkies," and there's not a pill available in any drug store which will cure this illness.

Thank You, Jimmy, for Our 'Flushing' Funds / Rico, John [932] [RICO-1979-932]
UNCLE HAS A PROBLEM - Uncle Sam, faced with inflationary problems, seems to have been backed into a rather controversial corner. While everyone is screaming about government spending, the race goes on throughout the country for state and federal handouts.

Main Street Keeps Rolling Along / Rico, John [912] [RICO-1979-912]
MAIN STREET - AN ORIGINAL NAME - The task of designating street names at times may be an arduous chore, but when Main Street received that title about 125 years ago there was no problem. It was the only business thoroughfare in Vacaville and it was the main one.

Publication showcased Vacaville to the rest of the world / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [41] [WAYITWAS-2000-41]
By the 1880s, immigration to California steadily increased. A large number of fruit ranches were established in the Vacaville area and elsewhere in the state. Newspapers, pamphlets and other printed advertisements throughout the United States extolled the beauty and climatic advantages of California, aiming to attract new settlers, and to open new markets.
