In the summer of 1858, John W. Barton declared himself an insolvent debtor. It's highly likely this was the Barton who operated Barton's Store in the area now known as Mankas Corner. A school had flourished at Barton's Store for several years and it was a regular stop for the stage coach.

Our recent local elections with low voter turnout and disinterested citizens had me look at earlier elections in Solano County. With today's well-regulated and orderly campaign and voting system in mind, 19th century elections read more like a riot.

School days, good old golden rule days. An estimated 9,000 Vacaville area elementary and high school students will go back to their classes next Tuesday. No one is able to predict whether registrations will be up or down. With home building here at a near stagnant position, there actually could be a decline in registrations for the fall semesters.

Vacaville residents during the 1850s and 1860s largely were supporters of the Democratic Party. With their strong agricultural background, voters found the Democratic platform more to their liking than the business-oriented one of the Republican Party. Hand in hand with this party affiliation went a sympathetic leaning toward supporting the South during the Civil War years. Thus the turmoil of those years also touched Vacaville.
