County rich with opportunity, thefts / Delaplane, Kristin [391] [ECHOS-1998-391]
In 1869, horse thieves were the bane of society. Early in the year a couple of mares were stolen from Lagoon Valley and then the most valuable two horses of 18 were taken from Mosley's Ranch near Vallejo.

'Poorhouse' rich source of memories / Bowen, Jerry [113] [WAYITWAS-2002-113]
In 1892, an article appearing in the Vallejo Weekly Chronicle gave a rather graphic account of the conditions of Solano's first County Hospital. Built in the mid 1870s, it was then located near where Tabor Park is today in Fairfield. The property occupied by the "poorhouse," as it was commonly called, consisted of 60 acres in that area with wind breaks of eucalyptus trees.

The ladies in the Vaca and surrounding valleys had an opportunity when Miss Gardner began giving lessons in lace work. Her terms were $1 per lesson or $5 per term. She gave an exhibition of her talents at Platt's store.

Early pioneers often were adventure-seeking men with the ability to adapt to changing situations and seize any opportunity that offered itself. One day rich, the next day poor again - nothing seems to have stopped their intrepid spirits.
