An 1879 tour saw a plethora of growers / Delaplane, Kristin [326] [ECHOS-1997-326]
In the spring of 1879, reporters from the Weekly Solano Republican set out to explore the countryside in the Vacaville Township and the town of Vacaville. They described the various ranches and farms and who owned the land. Many of today's streets were named for these early growers.

In the spring of 1879, staff from the Suisun City's Solano Republican set out to explore the countryside. Their trip started with a train ride to Bridgeport, present-day Cordelia. Along the route they viewed the orchards then in bloom. Once in Bridgeport they stopped in at each of the town's business establishments.

In my last column we saw the beginnings of the new town of Winters and its naming. The Dixon Tribune began reporting the development of Winters as "a flourishing town; on paper ... " and that several merchants in Vacaville and Dixon would be relocating or opening businesses in the town.

Ranch Towns In Two Areas / Wichels, Ernest [854] [WICHELS-1964-854]
Most people think of Vallejo strictly a shipyard city. Many find it difficult to believe that once it qualified as a "ranch town." Ranchowners, the hundreds of employes in dairy operations, cattle and sheep raising, and grain and hay harvests, formed a vital segment of Vallejo's economy in early days.

Information for this article came from the Vacaville Heritage Council, Solano Genealogical Society and Fairfield Public Library archives. In 1866, the boundaries of Green Valley Township were laid out. They included the sites of Green Valley and Suisun Valley and the villages Cordelia/Bridgeport, and Rockville.

Solano townships boomed, then went bust / Delaplane, Kristin [235] [ECHOS-1995-235]
Information for this article came from the Vacaville Museum, Vacaville Heritage Council and Vacaville Public Library. Solano County was one of the original 27 counties organized when California became a state in 1850. Providing water transport by the Sacramento River and its many sloughs and with some of the richest farming land, it was an ideal place to establish town sites. The towns were settled by men from the gold fields and those who came to California as pioneers.

My interest in Solano County history began in the 1990s after I retired from Mare Island Naval Shipyard, and it grew by leaps and bounds when I met who I consider one of Vacaville's finest men ever to grace this community, Bert Hughes, at the Vacaville Heritage Council.

With so many new folks in Solano County, and quite probably with many who have been here for several years, my bet is that a whole lot of you never have heard of the town of Birds Landing.
