Benicia a vibrant business hub in 1800s / Delaplane, Kristin [284] [ECHOS-1996-284]
Second in a series D.N. Hastings at First and D operated the Benicia Market and dealt in beef, pork, lard, hams, hides, tallow, game and vegetables. Vender John Dalton ran the Benicia Fruit Store and kept a stock of fruits, nuts, confectionery, cigars and tobacco.

In 1858, with the location of the county seat in Fairfield, building and business in that part of the county took off at break-neck speed. The county valuation for that year was upwards to $4 million dollars at a time when taxes were $1.35 on $100. By mid-October a brick building, built by Capt. County voters pick Fairfield as new hub / Delaplane, Kristin [310] [ECHOS-1996-310]
In the summer of 1858, John W. Barton declared himself an insolvent debtor. It's highly likely this was the Barton who operated Barton's Store in the area now known as Mankas Corner. A school had flourished at Barton's Store for several years and it was a regular stop for the stage coach.

Fruit operations make a mark in Vacaville / Delaplane, Kristin [334] [ECHOS-1997-334]
The orchards in the Vacaville Township were abuzz with activity and making the farmers plenty of money most seasons. Would-be fruit ranchers were anxious to try their hand at this successful business. For $15,000, one of the best fruit ranches could be had. Located close to town, it boasted grape vines and a large variety of fruit trees.

Cost of business in 1857 Benicia lowered / Delaplane, Kristin [294] [ECHOS-1996-294]
Just before New Year's 1857, there was a snowstorm in Benicia that lasted four to five hours and left 2 inches of snow on the ground. To citizens' knowledge, it was the first snowfall since the city was founded. Hatch, Brackett and Co., proprietors of the Brick Store at 1st and E, celebrated New Year's Eve with an old-fashioned housewarming to thank customers for their patronage.
