Soft land, big fire and cars sink Suisun City / Delaplane, Kristin [244] [ECHOS-1995-244]
Information for this article came from the Vacaville Heritage Council, Solano Genealogical Society and the Solano Historian. Second of two parts Historian Wood Young found these tidbits in an 1871 issue of the Weekly Solano Republican. Printed business-card-size advertisements for local doctors along with advertisements for patent medicines that cured consumption and seemingly every other wretched ailment that could befall a human being.

Suisun City becomes 1880s commerce center / Delaplane, Kristin [243] [ECHOS-1995-243]
Information for this article came from the Vacaville Heritage Council, Solano Genealogical Society, Solano Historian and the Suisun City Fire Department. First of two parts Suisun Township was the largest township in Solano County, consisting of about 110,000 acres; 10,000 of those acres were under water. The township was bounded all around by Elmira, Vacaville, Napa County, Green Valley Township, Benicia and the Montezuma Township.

Suisun's early years ripe with growth, drama / Bowen, Jerry [822] [WAYITWAS-2008-822]
In my last column, Suisun was incorporated and officers were elected in 1868. By 1879, nearly 10 years had elapsed before the railroad traversed the tule marsh on the direct route to Benicia. Ballast hauled onto the soft peat ground sank from sight time after time, although hundreds of trainloads were deposited. The sink would appear to be filled and work on the track started again, when suddenly the surface would give way, and the tracks would disappear.

The year was 1883 and a new Good Templars Lodge was established in Allendale with 23 members. But the big news that spring with the Good Templars was their May Day Temperance Picnic to be held at Oiler's Grove. J.M. Oiler would provide water, feed and a stable for up to 500 horses at 25 cents per animal [...]

Animal husbandry big business in Vaca / Delaplane, Kristin [332] [ECHOS-1997-332]
In 1883, the newly founded Vacaville newspaper, The Vacaville Reporter, advertised that the company provided services that are today provided by the downtown services of Pip's and Ulatis Printing, such as circulars, envelopes, handbills, business cards, funeral notices, billheads and visiting cards.

Mysterious disaster befalls Benicia seminary / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [676] [WAYITWAS-2006-676]
This is the final part of the story about The Wreath, a school paper published by teachers at the Benicia Young Ladies Seminary in 1855. Apparently, it was published as a regular paper, with selected extracts printed in the Solano Republican. - Editor
