Rockville park - site of massacre in 1810 / Dingler, Nancy [459] [RETROSPECT-2000-459]
The year was 1810 when Spain's appointed governor to California ordered a young lieutenant, Gabriel Moraga, to lead an expedition north of the Carquinez Straight. Gov. Sola wanted to learn more about the northern territory and what exploitative value it had, if any.

When I ended my last column I said, "Second-Lieutenant Gabriel Moraga with seventeen soldiers and an auxiliary force of Christian Indians of unknown size attacked the Suisun force of 120 fighting men on May 22, 1810 near Rockville." Here again is a misconception of history perhaps read out of context. It wasn't at Rockville. It was at or near today's Suisun City.

The year was 1934. The site was Rockville. Filled with historical interest, curiosity and excitement, people gathered from near and far. Some of Solano County's oldest living pioneers, dignitaries and school children had gathered for the unveiling of the 12-foot-high bronze statue of Chief Solano.

Gen. Vallejo sets out to tame the territories / Delaplane, Kristin [251] [ECHOS-1995-251]
First in a series Information for this article came from the Vacaville Heritage Council, Solano Genealogical Society and Solano Historian. Gen. Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, born in 1808, was to become the most prominent man in Northern California. He could date his ancestors back to the days of Columbus, when Alonzo Vallejo, admiral to the Spanish King, escorted Columbus back to Spain.

Iwama Market. Site of the Pierce Ranch horse barns, blacksmith shop, bunkhouse and Chinese quarters. Many of these structures were lost in one of the big fires that swept the Rockville Hills and followed down Suisun Creek. The present structure was 1927..

Waterman Park provided answer to wartime housing / Dingler, Nancy [486] [RETROSPECT-2003-486]
Shortly after the beginning of World War II, the Fairfield-Suisun Army Air Field was created. With it came construction workers who were housed in hastily erected "tar paper" barracks. As the war progressed, the mission of the airfield changed from reconnaissance to flying troops and supplies to the "Pacific theater" in our war against the Japanese.
