In 1775, Don Perez Ayala, a Spanish explorer, was the first white man to set foot on Mare Island, which he dubbed Isla de la Plana. His men killed some of the local elk and departed. Anniversaries do have a habit of repeating themselves. Last Tuesday's Chronicle featured an illustrated story of the demolition of the slip of the Mare Island Ferry Co. at the foot of Georgia Street. Since the days of Farragut (1854) this area has been the departure point of passengers bound for the naval shipyard.

The county asked for a Suscol and Vallejo road to connect Vallejo with the steam ferry to a point on the Contra Costa shore opposite Mare Island. From there travelers would take a wagon road to Alameda County. This would mean the traveling public would have an accessible and continuous highway from Napa to San Francisco that could be traveled in as short as four hours.
