Could schools of the past teach us something? / Bowen, Jerry [766] [WAYITWAS-2007-766]
This is the last in a series on the early rules of grammar school education. The subjects discussed were penmanship, bookkeeping and current events, as taken from the 1911 Solano County Course of Study. I'm not so sure that they are still pursued in depth in many of the schools of today to any degree.

Christmas customs of the past / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [768] [WAYITWAS-2007-768]
There are few recordings of how early Solano County settlers prepared for or celebrated the Christmas season. Customs surely varied widely based on each family's immigration background. Taking a day off from work and having the means to create a well-cooked meal likely were the highlights for early pioneers.

Course was spelled out for pupils 100 years ago / Bowen, Jerry [735] [WAYITWAS-2007-735]
In my last column we took a sneak preview of what it was like for school students back in 1909. I thought you might find it quite interesting how much of an education you had to have just to enter high school. In 1911, the Solano County Schools Board of Education issued a book of "Rules for Promotion and Graduation" and a "List of Supplementary Reading Books."

Current Seasonal Rainfall Is Disappointing / Rico, John [887] [RICO-1981-887]
LACK OF RAIN - ALWAYS A DRY SUBJECT - We are heading for the end of the present 1980-81 rainfall season, and with only the remainder of June in the 12-month period, there's every likelihood the total for the current season can be tabulated among the 11 in the past 80 years when precipitation has not gone over the current total of 15.12 inches.

New Year Eve Past Century / Wichels, Ernest [847] [WICHELS-1964-847]
We discover what our forefathers did during the New Year season by reading Farragut's log books, and looking over the early editions of the Vallejo Chronicle. How did the weather behave here 100 years ago today?
