Law was passed closing saloons on election day to quell rioting / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [763] [WAYITWAS-2007-763]
Our recent local elections with low voter turnout and disinterested citizens had me look at earlier elections in Solano County. With today's well-regulated and orderly campaign and voting system in mind, 19th century elections read more like a riot.

Voter Apathy Could Have Repercussions / Rico, John [886] [RICO-1981-886]

Orders For Mare Island / Wichels, Ernest [772] [WICHELS-1963-772]
We oldsters often date ourselves by the fashions we wear, by the tunes we hum, or by the furniture we insist on keeping. Today we are going to date the Mare Island Naval Shipyard. Most everyone knows that our great naval plant is 109 years old but it is interesting to read the thousands of Commandants' Orders and Notices which serve as milestones of the past century.

Big top's fall doesn't ruffle circus audience / Delaplane, Kristin [297] [ECHOS-1996-297]
Benicia was gearing up for its city elections in May. A meeting was called for nomination of city officers. The meeting was held in the Democratic Club Room located over the El Dorado Saloon. To be voted for were the offices of mayor, marshal, treasurer, assessor (the editors remarked that the assessor did anything generally but assess), and four councilmen.
