Solano has seen many changes / Dingler, Nancy [492] [RETROSPECT-2004-492]
The 1850s brought a major change to Suisun and the surrounding area that would alter the landscape forever. Ship captain, Josiah Wing purchased the "island" of Suisun from Curtis Wilson and Dr. John Baker in 1852, built a wharf and a warehouse, then had his house in San Francisco shipped up the slough and his family sent for. In partnership with John Owens, Captain Wing laid out the town of Suisun. They soon discovered that at low tide, Suisun was not an island, but connected to Fairfield by a strip of land, eventually named Union Ave.

Captain Waterman sailed ahead / Bowen, Jerry [167] [WAYITWAS-2003-167]
Fairfield is celebrating a yearlong centennial in observance of the city's incorporation in 1903. I thought a series of articles on Captain "Bully" Waterman, Fairfield's founder, would be appropriate and would bring to light what appears to be some questionable history linked to him.

The three Josiah Wings: shipping merchant, pioneer, mayor / Dingler, Nancy [485] [RETROSPECT-2003-485]
Flags were lowered to half-staff on all public buildings and many private businesses in Solano County, to note the sad and sudden death of Josiah Wing on June 14, 1915. He was so well-liked that the painful news of his death brought a countywide outpouring of sympathy for the family. Businesses closed the day of the funeral.
