In my last column we saw the beginnings of the new town of Winters and its naming. The Dixon Tribune began reporting the development of Winters as "a flourishing town; on paper ... " and that several merchants in Vacaville and Dixon would be relocating or opening businesses in the town.

In the winter of 1871, farmer Mathew Cooper was spitting wood he purchased some months before. He came upon a hollow log and discovered a large white oak walking cane.

Elmira church endures 125 years / Bowen, Jerry [93] [WAYITWAS-2001-93]
In 1859 the Annual Methodist Conference in Sacramento decided to raise funds for a Methodist college. The site chosen was in the Yolo County community known today as Zamora. Because of the poor quality of the clay there, the site was abandoned, even though work already had begun on the building.

Downpour made a memorable May Day / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [71] [WAYITWAS-2001-71]
While the celebration of May Day goes back to pagan times, it was celebrated in Solano County well into the 20th century. Each spring, residents anticipated gathering outdoors to enjoy the fresh young greenery, renew friendships after a long winter, dance around the maypole and feast on a lavish picnic.

Patriotism skyrocketed in Vacaville July 4th, 1898 / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [714] [WAYITWAS-2007-714]
This week, our communities will celebrate July 4th with a variety of parades, picnics and firework events. Similar celebrations took place more than a century ago, too, bringing residents together in large numbers. One of the more elaborate July 4 celebrations in Vacaville was held in 1898.
