A tale of gold buried at Rancho Solano / Bowen, Jerry [144] [WAYITWAS-2002-144]
As early as 1835, Jose Francisco Armijo was believed to have visited the Suisun Valley area. It must have made a favorable impression on him, because he applied for and received a land grant in 1839 from Mariano Vallejo. It consisted of about 13,000 acres of Suisun Valley, extending from Suisun Marsh to Manka's Corners and in March 1840, Gov. Alverado granted final approval.

It took a lot of work and coordination to complete a phone call just 50 or so years ago. Gone are those halcyon days when a friendly human voice would assist connecting you to someone by way of a toll call.

The following are news items of interest from various areas of Solano County as reported in 1865. Six miles east of Suisun City, Mrs. D.H. Fitzpatrick was selling her 160-acre ranch, which had been homesteaded in 1857. The price was $2,000.

Painting a tale of pink houses, spiral staircases / Bowen, Jerry [730] [WAYITWAS-2007-730]
In my last column, we went over the history of the Perry family and the house that was built in the 1860s that still stands, although probably not for long. The last of the Perry family, Clyde, will vacate the house just before demolition, likely in the near future.
