Late in 1929, Solano County residents once again began preparations for a large fair event. "The Bells of Solano County" was a brainchild of Solano Republican publisher David A. Weir and was heralded as the Solano County Exposition and County Fair. It was to take place May 24 to June 1, 1930.

Population takes off with a new air base / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [719] [WAYITWAS-2007-719]
Well into the 20th century, Vacaville, Fairfield, and Suisun remained small communities with slow-growing populations. By 1940, Fairfield had 1,312 residents. That growth pattern changed suddenly when construction of the Fairfield-Suisun Army Airfield began in 1942. Hundreds of workers flooded into the community to construct the new base - and every one of them needed a place to stay.

How the Nut Tree grew to be a landmark / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [661] [WAYITWAS-2006-661]
Last week at Solano County's exhibit at the State Fair, volunteers handed out nuts, candy, and paper fans announcing the opening of the new Nut Tree. Many visitors expressed their delight at the news that the Nut Tree was opening again, often followed by a precious memory of visits to the famous Nut Tree of old.

As many of my readers have guessed by now, I am intrigued by the number of great community events, celebrating a specific moment in local history or just life in general and usually involving the whole county, that have taken place over the last 150 years of Solano County's existence. Headlines of the various local newspapers always spout tantalizing words such as "thousands of visitors," "pageants," "gigantic" and "spectacular," and recount the enormous efforts to create these elaborate festivals.
