Hotel served travelers and club well / Bowen, Jerry [565] [WAYITWAS-2005-565]
The year 1936 saw the United States in the midst of the Depression. A short humorous article in The Reporter reflected the times: "Somebody Falling Down? There are said to be 10,000,000 unemployed in the United States. It's hard to believe that there are that many people unrelated to some public official."

Great Depression caused hard times in Solano / Bowen, Jerry [825] [WAYITWAS-2008-825]
Today I saw an interesting front page from a United Kingdom newspaper, The Independent, showing a photo that may or may not be a modern soup line waiting for handouts. The headline blatantly shouts, "United States of America 2008; The Great Depression."

County grows and ruffians rile children / Delaplane, Kristin [371] [ECHOS-1998-371]
The county asked for a Suscol and Vallejo road to connect Vallejo with the steam ferry to a point on the Contra Costa shore opposite Mare Island. From there travelers would take a wagon road to Alameda County. This would mean the traveling public would have an accessible and continuous highway from Napa to San Francisco that could be traveled in as short as four hours.

Vallejo had short-lived stint as state capital / Bowen, Jerry [782] [WAYITWAS-2007-782]
The next time you are in the area bounded by York, Santa Clara, Maine and Sacramento streets in Vallejo, you will be near a long-gone historic site. Back in 1852 a two-story building sporting two flags dominated a hill that was centrally located between those streets.
