Over the years, women's social clubs in Solano County have been in the forefront of many civic improvements to their respective communities. One of the oldest is the Wednesday Club of Suisun that was founded in 1911.

At the beginning of the 20th century, women all over the country founded women's service clubs to improve their communities. In upper Solano County, the three most prominent clubs were the Dixon Women's Improvement Club, Vacaville's Saturday Club, and Suisun/Fairfield's Wednesday Club.

In the first installment of the history of the Suisun Wednesday Club we saw it evolve from a meeting of 16 civic-minded ladies who in 1911 wanted to do something positive for their community to the building in 1926 of a permanent clubhouse on Sacramento Street and Washington Avenue.

The railroad ferry 'Solano' still lives / Bowen, Jerry [107] [WAYITWAS-2002-107]
A few weeks ago, I wrote a story about the first run of the railroad ferryboat, Solano. From that article I received a fair amount of e-mail and queries about the ferry. One of the most interesting was from a Thomas Rubarth in Arizona who had done considerable research on the Solano.
