Opera house curtain rose early / Bowen, Jerry [212] [WAYITWAS-2004-212]
Over the years, major fires have destroyed many of the old buildings in downtown Vacaville. In reality, many of the early structures would be of little use in today's modern world and in fact probably would be declared unsafe and finally be torn down.

Japanese torn from area in WWII / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [90] [WAYITWAS-2001-90]
In the early 20th century, Japan born Issei (immigrants born in Japan) and American born Nisei (the children of the Issei born in the United States) played a major role in Vacaville's economy. They leased and operated a majority of the fruit ranches, formed a small economic district nicknamed Japantown along Dobbins Street, bought houses, sent their children to local schools, ran a Buddhist Church and a Methodist Church, operated a sumo wrestling team, baseball and basketball teams, and in general seemed to be fully integrated as American citizens.

Vacaville destroyed in year's second inferno / Bowen, Jerry [36] [WAYITWAS-2000-36]
In the early days of California it was common for hastily erected towns to be destroyed by fire. Homes and businesses were built close together and usually out of wood. The cost and importance of fire protection was ignored until a disaster happened. Occasionally, after a particularly bad fire, a town would slowly fade away and disappear if it didn't have a good reason to rebuild.
