Quicksilver dominated Solano mining / Bowen, Jerry [208] [WAYITWAS-2004-208]
For some of us lucky enough to navigate our way through the complexities and dangers of living and able to dodge the grim reaper for six decades or more, we have been able to experience many things. For me, it was a long circuitous route before I became genuinely interested in history.

A complex history / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [558] [WAYITWAS-2004-558]
Solano County will celebrate the official opening its new Government Center in downtown Fairfield on Dec. 16. The new glass and steel building now dominates the face of downtown Fairfield. Yet before its advent, there were four different buildings that served as Solano County's government center.

Vallejo had short-lived stint as state capital / Bowen, Jerry [782] [WAYITWAS-2007-782]
The next time you are in the area bounded by York, Santa Clara, Maine and Sacramento streets in Vallejo, you will be near a long-gone historic site. Back in 1852 a two-story building sporting two flags dominated a hill that was centrally located between those streets.

Bridge's history spans nine decades / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [150] [WAYITWAS-2003-150]
Last summer, I was fortunate to be able to take a boat ride from Vallejo that explored the underside of both the present and the new Carquinez bridges. Seeing those massive pylons and huge spans of metal construction was an incredibly impressive sight.

Fires and family life at the Water Works / Bowen, Jerry [567] [WAYITWAS-2005-567]
Some of the most interesting local history comes from the people who lived it. Last year, during the Solano County Historical Society's Pioneer Days Celebration, I was very fortunate to meet Betty Davis who lives in Fairfield. While we were talking, she asked me if I would be interested in a family history that was written by her mother, Edith Lucille Venning.

A taste of gold fever in Solano / Bowen, Jerry [140] [WAYITWAS-2002-140]
The allure of gold and silver goes back a long way. An ancient culture in the area of today's Eastern Europe began roughly 6,000 years ago to use gold to fashion decorative objects. The gold probably was mined in the Transylvanian Alps or in the Mount Pangaion area of Thrace.
