Disaster strikes the Sophie McLane at Suisun / Bowen, Jerry [21] [WAYITWAS-2000-21]
Californians always have done things in a big way, but doing things in a big way does not always mean using good sense along with it.

Spanish Pruners Strike 1932 Spanish Pruners Strike 1932
2008

From 1911 to 1913, eight thousand Spanish families immigrated from Spain to the Hawaiian Islands. Promises of land and education were broken, nearly all continued to California, many would find their way to the fields and orchards of the San Joaquin Valley. In 1932 they went on strike. Annie Lizzie Gill: A pioneer in every sense / Bowen, Jerry [866] [WAYITWAS-2008-866]
In my last column, we left off with Annie Lizzie Gill's husband, Newton, dying on Jan. 22, 1924, by a fall. Then her youngest son, Homer, left home to see the world by working on ships, leaving just her and No. 1 son, Howard, to carry on with the future.

'Good old days' were not always good / Bowen, Jerry [195] [WAYITWAS-2003-195]
We like to reminisce about the "good old days" and indeed many of the earlier times were in fact just that.

Vacaville destroyed in year's second inferno / Bowen, Jerry [36] [WAYITWAS-2000-36]
In the early days of California it was common for hastily erected towns to be destroyed by fire. Homes and businesses were built close together and usually out of wood. The cost and importance of fire protection was ignored until a disaster happened. Occasionally, after a particularly bad fire, a town would slowly fade away and disappear if it didn't have a good reason to rebuild.

Railroad fire changed face of Suisun in 1906 / Bowen, Jerry [601] [WAYITWAS-2005-601]
With all the disasters flooding the news, I might as well add one more, although it's nowhere near on the scale of Hurricane Katrina. It happened in 1906. No, this story isn't about the San Francisco earthquake on April 18, 1906. That was already old news, at least for the local folks.

Captain steered profitable course / Bowen, Jerry [713] [WAYITWAS-2007-713]
The city of San Francisco frequently has been associated with disasters and abnormal behavior - in my opinion, anyway. And so it was with a ship named San Francisco.

Days Of May 114 Years Ago / Wichels, Ernest [799] [WICHELS-1964-799]
Many things have occurred in Vallejo's 114 years of existence. Every day must be an anniversary of some event in our community life. One way to dip into the pages of the past is to recall earlier happenings in the merry month of May.

Quicksilver dominated Solano mining / Bowen, Jerry [208] [WAYITWAS-2004-208]
For some of us lucky enough to navigate our way through the complexities and dangers of living and able to dodge the grim reaper for six decades or more, we have been able to experience many things. For me, it was a long circuitous route before I became genuinely interested in history.

Operation Chico was only a test / Bowen, Jerry [159] [WAYITWAS-2003-159]
The 1950s were disturbing times in the United States after World War II. It was the "Atomic Age" with fears of nuclear disaster strengthened as the first hydrogen bomb was tested in 1951.
