In my last column we saw the beginnings of the new town of Winters and its naming. The Dixon Tribune began reporting the development of Winters as "a flourishing town; on paper ... " and that several merchants in Vacaville and Dixon would be relocating or opening businesses in the town.

Bridge's history spans nine decades / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [150] [WAYITWAS-2003-150]
Last summer, I was fortunate to be able to take a boat ride from Vallejo that explored the underside of both the present and the new Carquinez bridges. Seeing those massive pylons and huge spans of metal construction was an incredibly impressive sight.

Winter storms and flooding have been part of local history since early settlers began to record the weather. The new year of 2006 will be remembered as one such moment in time during which severe rain and flooding created havoc for many county residents.
