Travel by auto sparks an unusual Christmas / Bowen, Jerry [196] [WAYITWAS-2003-196]
Every once in a while something happens that makes writing these columns about our past more fun than usual.

Pioneers took the road less traveled / Bowen, Jerry [129] [WAYITWAS-2002-129]
For several years I've had the pleasure of traveling many sections of the old trails that led the pioneers to California.

Discovery of gold powered steamboat river travel / Bowen, Jerry [238] [WAYITWAS-2004-238]
- Editor: This is the second installment of a feature about the Sacramento River. In my last column I discussed some of the early exploration of the Sacramento River and ended with the first steamboat that made regular runs from San Francisco to Sutter's Fort.

Local settlers traveled west with Donner Party / Bowen, Jerry [705] [WAYITWAS-2007-705]
When you study our West's history it is always interesting to note how many of the pioneer stories have a claim that they were part of the Donner Party.

Hotel served travelers and club well / Bowen, Jerry [565] [WAYITWAS-2005-565]
The year 1936 saw the United States in the midst of the Depression. A short humorous article in The Reporter reflected the times: "Somebody Falling Down? There are said to be 10,000,000 unemployed in the United States. It's hard to believe that there are that many people unrelated to some public official."

Golden Christmas memories of Sutter / Bowen, Jerry [51] [WAYITWAS-2000-51]
The following is a very condensed and edited version of an article from the San Francisco Examiner by John Bonner, in 1897. The surprise ending of the story causes one to wonder if John Sutter knew something more than he let on prior to James Marshall's historic discovery of gold at Coloma that started the gold rush to California - Editor.

Travel was not easy in the 1850s / Bowen, Jerry [39] [WAYITWAS-2000-39]
There has been a lot in the news lately about frustrating airport delays and gridlock on the nation's highways. Our lives have become so fast-paced even short travel interruptions are quite frustrating.

It's been a fun ride, but I'm ready to explore the West / Bowen, Jerry [868] [WAYITWAS-2008-868]
When I started writing Solano County history articles for The Reporter, I couldn't help wondering if there was enough history to write about different subjects for any amount of time. I must admit that while I was the editor and writer for the United Prospectors Inc. publications, there was plenty of fodder about the gold country but I wasn't sure about Solano County.

Christmas customs of the past / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [768] [WAYITWAS-2007-768]
There are few recordings of how early Solano County settlers prepared for or celebrated the Christmas season. Customs surely varied widely based on each family's immigration background. Taking a day off from work and having the means to create a well-cooked meal likely were the highlights for early pioneers.
