Memories of the Fairfield area / Bowen, Jerry [198] [WAYITWAS-2004-198]
Memoirs often provide valuable insight about the past that may seem of little importance when an individual first writes them. Today, with the last remains of the old company town of Cement rapidly disappearing under the onslaught of new development, a way of life is also being relegated to the dusty archives of history to be remembered only in the minds of a few old-timers and people who enjoy learning about the past.

Vacaville, Fairfield, Suisun - People County / Rico, John [902] [RICO-1981-902]
AND AWAY WE GROW- Years ago, in fact in 1910, when Vacaville residents traveled to San Francisco using old Highway 40, they needed to be alert in passing through Fairfield else they would have missed the few buildings there marking that hamlet. The population of Fairfield in 1910 was 834, and although Vacaville at that time was no booming metropolis, it claimed a population of 1177. Many Vacaville resident, seeking merchandise and services in those days gone by, would travel to nearby Suisun, which had more to offer than did Vacaville or Fairfield. But, look what's happened since those days.

Bog was barrier between two cities / Bowen, Jerry [818] [WAYITWAS-2008-818]
I left off in my last column noting that when Fairfield became the County Seat in 1858, Fairfield was still struggling to become the more prominent city, even though it had the increased influence of being the county seat. Suisun was already an important shipping port and business community, and many of the officials made their home in Suisun rather than Fairfield.

Life flowed on at the Fairfield waterworks / Bowen, Jerry [570] [WAYITWAS-2005-570]
Before I get into the meat of this column, I need to correct a mistake I made in the first segment. In the column I spelled Ms. Venning's middle name as "Lucille." It is spelled "Lucile."
