Skipper's skill beat difficult straits / Bowen, Jerry [189] [WAYITWAS-2003-189]
Quite a few of you responded to my last article on Mare Island and inquired as to whether I had any more stories. Well, of course! But, before I go on, I need to correct an error in the last story. I'd like to thank Philip Gilbert for pointing out my blunder.

Mare Island fostered many stories / Bowen, Jerry [187] [WAYITWAS-2003-187]
Last March, my fellow history columnist Goerke-Shrode, Sabine wrote an article on Mare Island, but I thought I would expand on it a little with a few stories about the ships and men who were part of the island's history, similar to "the rest of the story" as radio commentator Paul Harvey would say.

Settlers relied on their own skills / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [48] [WAYITWAS-2000-48]
Health care has always been a concern to the families settling in a new area. Early pioneers had to rely on their skills and knowledge, treating common ailments with herbs and other substances then thought to be beneficial. Almost every housewife had her own stash of medicinal supplies with which to doctor her family. Some women gained quite a lot of experience and people would seek them out for advice and help.

Efforts are poured into a record of Solano / Bowen, Jerry [498] [WAYITWAS-2004-498]
In my last article I discussed how the Solano County Historical Society began and we saw that members plunged into many difficult projects right from the start. In this installment of the history of the society we shall see what progress was made and look at other projects they poured their efforts into.

Early Media / Wichels, Ernest [852] [WICHELS-1964-852]
It is difficult for most of us, living in the year 1964, to realize the advantages we possess over those available to Vallejo residents or Mare Island personnel just a hundred years ago. We take our freeways, radio and TV, dial telephones with direct connections to New York or Hawaii, automobiles, airplanes, etc., for granted.

Course was spelled out for pupils 100 years ago / Bowen, Jerry [735] [WAYITWAS-2007-735]
In my last column we took a sneak preview of what it was like for school students back in 1909. I thought you might find it quite interesting how much of an education you had to have just to enter high school. In 1911, the Solano County Schools Board of Education issued a book of "Rules for Promotion and Graduation" and a "List of Supplementary Reading Books."

The Vanden Station Train Wreck / Bowen, Jerry [44] [WAYITWAS-2000-44]
When you read the old newspapers, it's somewhat astonishing to see how often people were injured or killed by trains in the early part of the century. Inattention, lack of adequate warnings at railroad crossings, company policies, and the insane urge to "beat" the trains through the intersection were often the reasons for the accidents.

Sale of Mare Island complicated / Bowen, Jerry [137] [WAYITWAS-2002-137]
The text of the deed to purchase Mare Island on Jan. 4, 1853, and recorded April 18, 1853, began as follows:
