How the Nut Tree grew to be a landmark / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [661] [WAYITWAS-2006-661]
Last week at Solano County's exhibit at the State Fair, volunteers handed out nuts, candy, and paper fans announcing the opening of the new Nut Tree. Many visitors expressed their delight at the news that the Nut Tree was opening again, often followed by a precious memory of visits to the famous Nut Tree of old.

'At the turn of the century, the governor of Hawaii came up with the idea that maybe the Portuguese and Spanish people would be good to work in the fields. They had knowledge of sugar cane, because sugar cane was raised in many of the Spanish colonies.

Exploring a mansion's storied past / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [178] [WAYITWAS-2003-178]
Driving along Suisun Valley Road, I am always intrigued by Stonedene, the Gothic revival mansion situated opposite Solano Community College. The history of this particular location reaches back into the time before the first white settlers arrived.
