Prohibition's twists and turns / Bowen, Jerry [105] [WAYITWAS-2002-105]
The idea of liquor being illegal throughout the country seems like small potatoes compared with the many serious situations that we face in so-called "modern-day" life.

Twists and turns on the trail of bygone days / Bowen, Jerry [721] [WAYITWAS-2007-721]
History is a dynamic subject with many traps regarding accuracy along the way. A lot of items related to history in Solano County have popped up lately, so, I thought that I would take the opportunity to talk about some of those bits and pieces.

Pearl Fowler and Evelyn Lockie, both born around the turn of the century, wrote about their early days in Cordelia and the Suisun Valley. These writings give a window into their world and what their day-to-day life was like in Solano County. Fowler lived in the Green Valley Township with the small town of Cordelia the center of her universe.

I was kickin' back at the Vacaville Heritage Council, cogitating on what I should write about this week, when I happened to glance at a couple of photos of Vacaville in the old days.

The day Armijo High School burned down / Dingler, Nancy [471] [RETROSPECT-2002-471]
The fall of 1929 was turning out to be quite a year for the country, and for Fairfield, as well. Black Thursday - Oct. 24 - had brought about the stock market crash. People all over the country, whether they had the financial means or not, had invested in the market.

Chrysler's Empire Building on the corner of Solano and Suisun streets in Suisun City was turned into a dwelling. In 1865, the I.O.G.T. had its rooms over the Empire Saloon. A. It was a taxing situation during the Depression / Bowen, Jerry [827] [WAYITWAS-2008-827]
In my last column we began to take a brief look at some of the history of the Depression of the 1930s. A look at our elected officials performance gives us reason to wonder if they have learned anything from the past.

Vallejo, others taken prisoner by rebellions / Bowen, Jerry [632] [WAYITWAS-2006-632]
In my last column, members of the Bear Flag Rebellion had invaded Gen. Mariano Vallejo's home June 14, 1846. In spite of the tense situation, Vallejo acted as a welcoming host to the changing leadership and assisted with the writing of the articles of capitulation. Many of the members of the rebellion were feeling the effects of the liquor they were consuming both inside and outside Vallejo's home.

Railroad fire changed face of Suisun in 1906 / Bowen, Jerry [601] [WAYITWAS-2005-601]
With all the disasters flooding the news, I might as well add one more, although it's nowhere near on the scale of Hurricane Katrina. It happened in 1906. No, this story isn't about the San Francisco earthquake on April 18, 1906. That was already old news, at least for the local folks.
