Third in a series Shortly before Isaac Davis died in 1869, the Jerome Davis homestead was converted into a hotel named Yolo House. It operated as a hotel under a number of landlords up to about 1871.

Last week: The discovery of Mare Island, how it got its name and finally being selected as the site of a West Coast Navy yard. Information for this article came from the Vacaville Heritage Council and Shipyard Historian's files. The day the Farragut party arrived at Mare Island - Sept. 16, 1854 - stands as the official date that the Navy took possession of the island with Commander David Glasgow Farragut in command to commence building the Navy Yard.

Information for this article came from Vice Mayor and former Chief of Police Gary Tatum, the Vacaville Museum, Vacaville Heritage Council, and Solano County Archives. First in a series In the 1800s, a constable or two were assigned to an area as soon as a town was established. Also, one or two people, generally lawyers, would act as justices of the peace. The justice of the peace served as a judge, could perform marriages, was there for registering voters and recording deeds and was the notary public.

First in a series In 1775, Don Perez Ayala, described as a dashing young Spanish lieutenant, was the first to sail through the Golden Gate. He and his crew were aboard the gunboat San Carlos.

Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, born in 1808, was to become the most prominent man in Northern California. He could date his ancestors back to the days of Columbus, when Alonzo Vallejo, admiral to the Spanish King, escorted Columbus back to Spain.

Information for this article came from the Dixon Historical Society, the Dixon Public Library, and the Solano Genealogical Society. In 1855, the northeastern portion of Solano County was designated a township by the Board of Supervisors. This township, called Tremont, was adjacent to the Silveyville Township.
