/
Bowen, Jerry
[565]
[WAYITWAS-2005-565]

There are said to be 10,000,000 unemployed in the United States. It's hard to believe that there are that many people unrelated to some public official."

/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[564]
[WAYITWAS-2005-564]
In 1886, Henry Goosen opened a blacksmith shop and general hardware store in Cordelia. He had a strong background in well drilling, pumps, steam machinery and related areas. As such, he had become interested in the Fairfield Water Works, located on Empire Street behind the Courthouse. I just had to run over to Dixon the other day. I wanted to see if the George's Giant Orange booth still existed. I took the Dixon Exit from Interstate 80 and, yep, there it was and it was in great shape.

Teachers and pupils had some challenges
/
Bowen, Jerry
[560]
[WAYITWAS-2005-560]
When our family moved from North Dakota to California in 1950, I was in the eighth grade. It was quite a shock going from a school system with good discipline and challenging education to the loose uncontrolled discord of the school system I attended in the South Bay Area.

They dined royally at Vacaville hotel
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine

[WAYITWAS-2004-559]
In the past as now, Vacaville society enjoyed a good party. Around the turn of the last century, opportunities and public locations were much more limited than they are today. Residents' wish lists mainly included a nice downtown hotel and restaurant.

Bowen, Jerry

[WAYITWAS-2004-557]
In my last column we saw the beginnings of the new town of Winters and its naming. The Dixon Tribune began reporting the development of Winters as "a flourishing town; on paper ... " and that several merchants in Vacaville and Dixon would be relocating or opening businesses in the town.

Solano County will celebrate the official opening its new Government Center in downtown Fairfield on Dec. 16. The new glass and steel building now dominates the face of downtown Fairfield. Yet before its advent, there were four different buildings that served as Solano County's government center.

Care of indigent patients had rude beginnings
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[555]
[WAYITWAS-2004-555]
Increasing population numbers during the 1860s in Solano County made the creation of a central institution to treat ill residents a necessity. While patients normally were nursed at home by dedicated family members, assisted by a doctor, those who could neither afford medical care nor didn't have family, needed another source of care.
