Early Days of Vallejo Early Days of Vallejo
1943

This little amount of "Early Days" has not a great deal of literary merit nor is it of particular interest to anyone coming to Vallejo during the past few years, but it is an accurate picture of the town itself in the 40s, 50s and also from information he derived from family, friends and members of the old Hook and Ladder Co. So since there are still in Vallejo some descendants of the original settlers they will, no doubt, derive some pleasure in reading of the social activities of their ancestors..

Memorial Days In Vallejo / Wichels, Ernest [802] [WICHELS-1964-802]
Decoration Day was made a fixed celebration on May 5, 1868, when Commander-in-Chief John A. Logan, of the Grand Army of the Republic, issued a general order designating May 30, 1868, "for the purpose of strewing with flowers the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country." Some 15 years later the G.A.R. asked that the name of this annual observance be changed to "Memorial Day," but here in 1964-about 80 years later-we still find many old timers calling it "Decoration Day."

But last week's list told only half the story. History centers can also be found in and around the cities of Rio Vista, Benicia and Vallejo. Like their counterparts in the central and northern Solano County, these centers also rely on volunteers to fulfill their missions.

Buildings That Are Old, New / Wichels, Ernest [807] [WICHELS-1964-807]
Several days ago the Casa de Vallejo was heavily damaged by fire. The blaze was confined to the wooden, or eastern portion of the structure. The younger generation is undoubtedly of the opinion that this has always been a hotel-but less than 50 years ago it served an entirely different purpose.

Old Rocks, Other Items / Wichels, Ernest [809] [WICHELS-1964-809]
No one thinks of Vallejo as a former "mining town" and most of Solano County's residents will probably say that the only "mineral" in the county is the natural gas produced in the southern and eastern sections.

At old hotels, you slept with your boots on / Delaplane, Kristin [275] [ECHOS-1996-275]
Third in a series Suisun City's major hotel was the landmark Roberts House located on the square. It burned down, but it was rebuilt in a most lavish manner. It featured three stories with a balcony and was renamed the Arlington Hotel. In 1868, the site of Elmira was established to accommodate the train, and within a bit of time the Sample Rooming House and Bar was built.

Snapshots of an era / Bowen, Jerry [733] [WAYITWAS-2007-733]
Among the collections at the Vacaville Heritage Council and the Solano County Genealogy Society at the Old Town Hall on East Main Street are yearbooks from Solano County Schools dating back as far as the late 1890s. These publications are a treasure that help historians gain some insight into past attitudes, styles of dress, and pride in school and community and to perhaps learn something valuable from the "good old days."
