Pioneer settler wanted land, not gold
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[136]
[WAYITWAS-2002-136]
Though he was born in Orange County, Va., on May 30, 1808, he grew up in Kentucky. Like many young frontier men, he felt the urge to move further west. The year 1830 found him as a farmer in New London, Miss., where he married Cornelia Catherine Lamme, a great-granddaughter of Daniel Boone, on Jan. 19, 1830.

Pena Adobe has a colorful history
/
Delaplane, Kristin
[395]
[ECHOS-1998-395]
The Pena Adobe, a registered historical landmark, was the original home of Juan Felipe Pena, one of the first European settlers in the area in the 1840s. Today the city of Vacaville along with the Vacaville Heritage Council is working on making repairs and upgrading the environment so that the artifacts that relate to the adobe's heritage may be safely housed there. Volunteers are wanted for this project. The goal is to bring the adobe up to the standards of a quality museum-like structure and then maintain regular hours with volunteer docents.

Wolfskill family set tone for Solano's future
/
Delaplane, Kristin
[245]
[ECHOS-1995-245]
Information for this article came from the Vacaville Heritage Council and the Vacaville Museum. Wolfskill descendants can trace their story back to the 1740s Prussia and Frederick the Great's ongoing wars. Rather than fight in wars where the loss of life was incredibly high, in 1742, Joseph Wolfskeil moved to the wilderness of Pennsylvania to take his chances.

Vaca, Pena rift impacts both families
/
Bowen, Jerry
[650]
[WAYITWAS-2006-650]
In my last article we saw a rift grow between the Vacas and Penas. As a result, several members of the Vaca clan migrated from the Vacaville area, mainly toward the northern reaches of the grant, which today is Davis. By the 1850s, there were only 12 Vacas in the immediate area.

Settlers relied on their own skills
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[48]
[WAYITWAS-2000-48]
Health care has always been a concern to the families settling in a new area. Early pioneers had to rely on their skills and knowledge, treating common ailments with herbs and other substances then thought to be beneficial. Almost every housewife had her own stash of medicinal supplies with which to doctor her family. Some women gained quite a lot of experience and people would seek them out for advice and help.
