71. Rockville park - site of massacre in 1810 / Dingler, Nancy [459] [RETROSPECT-2000-459]
The year was 1810 when Spain's appointed governor to California ordered a young lieutenant, Gabriel Moraga, to lead an expedition north of the Carquinez Straight. Gov. Sola wanted to learn more about the northern territory and what exploitative value it had, if any.

Two centuries ago, in the 1800s, it became all the rage to "take the cure" in natural waters alive with sulfur and other curative minerals. Throughout Europe and America, the wealthy would flock to sumptuous resorts to be slathered in mud or to soak in hot waters that would soothe the body's ills from indigestion to arthritis. Such a popular remedy did not remain solely the indulgence of the idle rich.

The year was 1934. The site was Rockville. Filled with historical interest, curiosity and excitement, people gathered from near and far. Some of Solano County's oldest living pioneers, dignitaries and school children had gathered for the unveiling of the 12-foot-high bronze statue of Chief Solano.
