A man of history, community service
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[121]
[WAYITWAS-2002-121]
This is the story of a man many folks in Solano County know. I have always felt very fortunate that I was lucky enough to count myself among Bert Hughes' many friends.

Drivers of today, 1926 much the same
/
Bowen, Jerry
[119]
[WAYITWAS-2002-119]
Transportation seems to occupy a lot of space in newsprint today. High insurance rates, drunk driving, overcrowded highways and the huge number of cars on the road all seem to be a big problem.

/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[118]
[WAYITWAS-2002-118]
Whenever I read about the efforts early pioneers made to reach California, I am awed at their dogged spirit and their willingness to accept incredible hardships.

Saving the Lawler house was not easy
/
Bowen, Jerry
[117]
[WAYITWAS-2002-117]
Preserving the past is not always a high priority with most people and as a result, much of our history in the West becomes lost in the shuffle of daily routine.

Vacaville saw weddings big and small
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[116]
[WAYITWAS-2002-116]
My last column explored how the Christopher and Towson families celebrated their respective weddings amid close friends and relatives at the bride's home. Most weddings of that day were conducted in this quiet fashion. The wedding of Frank H. Buck and Annie Elizabeth Stevenson on April 29, 1886, on the other hand, was a large, elaborate affair.

'Poorhouse' rich source of memories
/
Bowen, Jerry
[113]
[WAYITWAS-2002-113]
In 1892, an article appearing in the Vallejo Weekly Chronicle gave a rather graphic account of the conditions of Solano's first County Hospital. Built in the mid 1870s, it was then located near where Tabor Park is today in Fairfield. The property occupied by the "poorhouse," as it was commonly called, consisted of 60 acres in that area with wind breaks of eucalyptus trees.
