And yet we find that the average Solano an seems only dimly aware of our county's heritage in waterborne traffic, and its past and present reliance on water "highways."

In 1883 the Congress passed the Anti-Debris Act, which was meant to curb the damage wrought by hydraulic mining. In California it was commonly called placer mining. But it was not until Judge Lorenzo rendered his famous decision on Jan. 9, 1884, that hydraulic mining practically ceased in the Sierra Nevada.

It rained this past week-considerably above November's 91-year average of about 1.80 inches. But earlier Vallejoans saw much more moisture than we've had. November of 1885 had 6.6 inches; November of 1926 a total of 6.2 inches. And 1875, 1892, 1913 and 1934 recorded 5-inch rainfalls in November.
