The genuine lover of the human family rejoices greatly when a new avenue is opened for the cultivation of the best ambitions of women. Chief among the many advantages resulting from the discovery of gold in California is that cosmopolitan principle in society which has tended to develop in women, as well as men, the power to lead and direct others in almost all industrial enterprises; especially in the important line of fruit production. In that, women have shown their fitness to a remarkable degree.

'The church was the real center of social activity. In this little town of 2,000, there were eight churches of different denominations. We attended the Presbyterian Church regularly - Sunday school, church service and on Wednesday, night prayer meetings.

The 50th anniversary of the discovery of gold in California was celebrated in 1898, and this year is the 150th anniversary of the same event. The event was celebrated in San Francisco in 1898 with a Mining Fair. This included a diversified program for all attending.

Many who eventually settled in Solano County first arrived in California to try their luck in the gold fields. Robert Campbell emigrated to California in 1850, first arriving in Placerville. He farmed, teamed and mined on the American River until 1854.

The discovery of gold in Colma in January 1848 set off one of the greatest gold rushes known to man. The 150th anniversary of the momentous discovery is being celebrated this year. Today the discovery of the first gold is credited to James Marshall and the official date given for that discovery is Jan. 24.

Chrysler's Empire Building on the corner of Solano and Suisun streets in Suisun City was turned into a dwelling. In 1865, the I.O.G.T. had its rooms over the Empire Saloon. A. Chrysler, long associated with the Cosmopolitan Saloon, opened a new saloon in White's building, calling it Chrysler's Sample Rooms.

The county asked for a Suscol and Vallejo road to connect Vallejo with the steam ferry to a point on the Contra Costa shore opposite Mare Island. From there travelers would take a wagon road to Alameda County. This would mean the traveling public would have an accessible and continuous highway from Napa to San Francisco that could be traveled in as short as four hours.
