In January 1858, Mart Taylor's Comedians, a troupe that was touring the state, performed at Benicia's Court House. The bill of fare was "Betsy Baker" and "Pleasant Neighbors." In between, Ms. Arabella danced the highland fling in a "most fascinating manner," Mart Taylor sang his favorite songs and Mr. Thompson danced the Wooden Shoe.

Their trade routes were well-established, allowing for trading between the coastal Indians and the inland groups. Toward the later part of the summer of 1857, the Bray's Minstrels, a celebrated band, performed at the courthouse in Benicia. It was followed by the Excelsior Theatrical Group, which performed two nights running. It was quite a large company, capable of putting on skits and plays with a good number of characters.

In the summer of 1857, the citizens of Benicia were apparently considering seeking gold - on their rooftops! The precious metal was escaping from the chimneys at the mint in San Francisco. It was a problem of such consequence that new flues were being constructed in a zigzag pattern so as to prevent the escape of gold dust from the mint.

Benicia was gearing up for its city elections in May. A meeting was called for nomination of city officers. The meeting was held in the Democratic Club Room located over the El Dorado Saloon. To be voted for were the offices of mayor, marshal, treasurer, assessor (the editors remarked that the assessor did anything generally but assess), and four councilmen.
