In 1863, news from Mare Island included the arrival of the Paul Pray, which had been damaged when it ran up on the rocks at Alcatraz. A no-tice also was issued that four U.S. Marines deserted when they arrived at Mare Island. A $15 reward was offered for their arrest.

By October 1858, the Solano County Herald publisher, William J. Hooton, had managed to move his printing equipment by dray from Benicia to his offices in Suisun City located in a new building on the south side of the Plaza. This momentous move was made because of the county seat being situated in Fairfield. The publisher addressed this in the first edition from Suisun dated October 2.

In the summer of 1858, John W. Barton declared himself an insolvent debtor. It's highly likely this was the Barton who operated Barton's Store in the area now known as Mankas Corner. A school had flourished at Barton's Store for several years and it was a regular stop for the stage coach.

In the spring of 1858, a new stage line was being established to run between Marysville and Vallejo or Benicia by way of Smith's Ferry, Cacheville, McMahon Ranch and Vacaville. This route was nearly identical to that of the proposed railroad. That it was to operate within nine miles of Napa City meant it would be not only accommodate passengers to and from upper Solano County, but also Napa Springs.

The scandal in Solano County government the year of 1858 involved the salary of the district attorney: At that time, when high prices were universal and people were bringing down expenses, the people were being informed that the Board of Supervisors put in for a bill to beef up the DA's salary by $500 a year. Prior to this resolution the DA was making $1,000 year. In addition, he could have outside clients as long as it wasn't a criminal case. Interestingly, this resolution on the upgrade in the DA's salary did not appear in the board's minutes.
